Sunrise Over George Washington Bridge

by Farrah Sarafa | 2009

Justin reminded me this morning
Of the comforts and high
Of firm, long run
To the Washington bridge sky

Wearing shorts mid-January,
Small socks and thin clothed hairs,
We clicked heads, met eyes
And delved into frigid airs.

Our strengths and persistence willed to warmth
Muscular atrophy,
adrenaline gold,
He took notes, I chose to see

Times Square lights dim to make Harlem Night's
Nightly and frightening,
Street butts to endless
Clutter—we felt whims tightening

Progressively from downtown to up,
From Broadway to haunting
Legs metabolized
Light changed to muscle sting.
