Villa Marina

by Linda Simone | 2005

Apennine-swaddled,
we're parched by hot Ligurian sun–
thirst quenchable
only by wines –
   celery-pale
   dark as eggplant.

In a villa,
seven travelers gather a tavola
   patio, dining room,
   granite island
   in our cucina
to eat and pour
and laugh and pour
toasting the moon-sequined sea.

Figs and limes,
basil and mint – everything,
has a nose.
On leafy arbors,
all the grapes have been plucked –
   almost time to go home.
